Firm Foundation Song Story

The first inspiration for this song came from a sermon that pastor Steven Furtick did at Elevation Church about 4 years ago called "Its in the middle."

One of the points that he made during that sermon, and I'm paraphrasing here, was that when it comes to salvation, we can look back and see that we are not who we once were but we don't feel like we are exactly who we want to be because we are stuck in the middle of the process of change and transformation to become more like Christ. God will keep a gap between us and perfection so that we stay humble and keep moving forward in relationship with Him. The same gift of grace that gave us salvation is the grace that stays with us in the middle as we stumble forward. Check out that sermon here,

That is where the first verse came from, "I'm staring down the space between where I am and where I want to be, It seems so far away but to have You here with me is all I want and all I really need God"

Then the pre-chorus says, "You say that You'll never leave me and I know that Your word is true" which was inspired by Hebrews 13:5 "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” and 2 Tim 3:16 "All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

From there I thought of 1 Samuel 2:2 "There is no one holy like the Lord, indeed there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God", which inspired the first part of the chorus, "God you are the Rock where I can firmly stand when the ground starts to crumble under me." The second part of the chorus was inspired by Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

It goes, "I may not always understand Your plan but I know you only want what's good for me."

The second verse says, "When shame starts creeping in and I feel the weight of all my sin again, You say come to me and I'll give you rest, you're not perfect but I don't love you any less, and I know that Your word is true"

That was inspired by Mathew 11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and I will give you rest."

Lastly, for the bridge I thought of Mathew 7:24 "Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on a rock."

It goes, "God help me build my life on Your purpose, the firm foundation of Your truth is what I need, There's no other source that can fulfill me, the assurance of Your grace sets me free.

I admit that I have plenty of experience seeking other sources for fulfillment but I know that turning to God and seeking relationship with Him through Christ is the only path to true satisfaction and soul fulfillment.
